9 day Kilimanjaro trek through shira route

9 day kilimanjaro Trek - Overview

Join a 9 day Kilimanjaro trek via the Shira Route. Explore landscapes, and conquer Uhuru Peak for an unforgettable adventure. Book now.The Shira Route is a scenic and less crowded path to Kilimanjaro’s Uhuru Peak, starting at Shira Gate (3,500m). As one of the highest starting points, early acclimatization is crucial, making the 9-day Kilimanjaro trek beneficial. Climbers traverse the Shira Plateau, a vast volcanic plain featuring diverse landscapes from moorlands to alpine deserts. On the second day, the route merges with Lemosho, ensuring a steady ascent that improves acclimatization and reduces altitude sickness risks. The final climb begins at midnight from Barafu Camp, leading trekkers to Uhuru Peak through Stella Point.

Fitness needed to climb mount Kilimanjaro

Climbing Kilimanjaro is challenging due to the altitude, steep ascents, and changing temperatures, but it is achievable with proper preparation. On most days, you will walk for six to seven hours, so pacing yourself is crucial. Hiking too fast makes it harder for your body to adjust, while a steady pace helps with acclimatization. Being in good shape also makes the climb easier, so start training a few months in advance. Multi-day hikes are ideal, but running and other cardio exercises also help. Altitude sickness is unpredictable, but you can reduce the risk by adding an extra day to your trek, giving your body more time to adjust and improving your chances of reaching the summit. Shira camp 2

Using the "climb high, sleep low" approach, this portion of the Shira Route is crucial for acclimatization. Trekkers trek to Lava Tower (4,630 m/15,190 ft) from Shira 2 Camp (3,890 m/12,762 ft), a strenuous but worthwhile ascent with breathtaking views of the glaciers. The trail descends to Barranco Camp (3,950 m/12,959 ft) after arriving at Lava Tower. It is tucked away in the picturesque Barranco Valley and is encircled by unusual Giant Senecio trees. This descent is an essential element of the Kilimanjaro trek since it aids in altitude adjustment prior to the subsequent stage, which includes the climb up Barranco Wall.

Barranco Camp

Using the "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization technique, this stretch of the Shira Route connects Karanga Camp (4,040 m/13,254 ft) and Barranco Camp (3,950 m/12,959 ft). With breathtaking vistas of the glaciers and unusual plants like Giant Senecio trees, the trail descends into Barranco Valley. At Barafu, hikers rest and prepare for the midnight summit assault, with stunning views of Mawenzi Peak and the summit ridge, ensuring they are well-rested for the final ascent.

Barafu Camp

A vital resting place just below Mount Kilimanjaro's summit, Barafu Camp (4,645 m/15,239 ft) serves as the base camp for climbers preparing for the last ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m/19,341 ft), the mountain's highest point. Climbers start the strenuous ascent from Barafu, usually early in the morning to arrive at Uhuru Peak before sunrise. With breathtaking views of the surrounding terrain and glaciers, the trek entails a final push to the summit after a difficult rise to Stella Point.

Millenium Camp

Day 7-8: Climbers descend from Millennium Camp (3,820m / 12,532ft) through scenic woodlands, gradually losing elevation until reaching Mweka Gate (1,640m / 5,380ft).
